      Quito, Ecuador's Andean Treasure

Author: Josue Loor

"The only colonial city in the world that rises more than 2,800 meters above sea level"

I arrived early in the morning, and the fresh air at that altitude (over 2,800 meters above sea level) was the first thing I noticed. The city stretches out in a valley, with the mountains as a backdrop—you could even see Cotopaxi in the distance, albeit with some clouds.

I tried the potato stew (locro de papas) at a small restaurant downtown—it was comforting and full of flavor. I also indulged in some of the tropical fruit ice creams sold on the streets; the passion fruit was my favorite.

The people are very friendly and always willing to help with directions. I used public transport (buses), which is inexpensive, although it's a good idea to plan your routes because the city is very hilly. I had to take some time to adjust to the altitude—I walked slowly at first and drank plenty of water.

Something important I learned:

Because of the altitude, the sun is much stronger even when it's cool outside – it's essential to use sunscreen and wear a hat or cap, even on cloudy days. Also, some tourist sites charge different entrance fees for foreigners and locals, so it's always a good idea to ask.

- Local festivities: While I was there, there were preparations for a fair in the Guápulo neighborhood – people were decorating the streets with flags and flowers, and the community spirit was very noticeable.

- The highest capital city in the world: At 2,850 meters above sea level, it is the capital of a country and the highest city on the planet – even higher than La Paz (which is the seat of government but not the official capital of Bolivia).

- Giant Historic Center: It is one of the largest in Latin America, with more than 130 colonial churches and convents declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1978.

  1. I found this place very interesting, especially because of its altitude and climate, which make it unique. The view of the mountains and Cotopaxi makes it even more impressive, and the typical food like locro de papas sounds delicious. All this motivates me to visit this place
