      Quito, Ecuador's Andean Treasure Author: Josue Loor "The only colonial city in the world that rises more than 2,800 meters above sea level" I arrived early in the morning, and the fresh air at that altitude (over 2,800 meters above sea level) was the first thing I noticed. The city stretches out in a valley, with the mountains as a backdrop—you could even see Cotopaxi in the distance, albeit with some clouds. I tried the potato stew (locro de papas) at a small restaurant downtown—it was comforting and full of flavor. I also indulged in some of the tropical fruit ice creams sold on the streets; the passion fruit was my favorite. The people are very friendly and always willing to help with directions. I used public transport (buses), which is inexpensive, although it's a good idea to plan your routes because the city is very hilly.
